'Bathing Bellbird' (korimako) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

The bellbird (korimako) is of one of New Zealand’s native honeyeaters, which feed on nectar, fruit, and insects. They are known for their beautiful bell-like songs, similar to that of tūī, which is NZ’s only other honeyeater. Hannah photographed this male bellbird having its afternoon bath while on a trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island. The island plays an important role in NZ conservation, with it being home to a variety of endangered birds and reptiles such as the kōkako, hihi, takahē and tuatara. The 220 hectare island was formerly stripped of 94% of its native bush for over a century of farming use, but between 1984 and 1994, volunteers planted over 250,000 trees and eradicated all mammalian predators. It is now 60% native forest and the remainder left as grassland for open-habitat species. Located just east of Whangaparāoa (north of Auckland) and able to be visited on day and/or overnight trips, visiting Tiritiri Matangi is a surreal experience, as there are beautiful native birds everywhere, and the birdsong is especially incredible where they flock. Venturing out at night, you can see little spotted kiwi and little blue penguins, and in the morning all the birds sing their glorious dawn chorus, to welcome the new day.
