'Falcon in flight' (NZ falcon/kārearea) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

The New Zealand falcon (kārearea) is a raptor found throughout the country, as well as on Stewart Island and NZ’s subantarctic islands. There are three types of NZ falcon – Southern, Eastern, and Bush – and unfortunately all are threatened (nationally endangered, nationally vulnerable, and nationally increasing, respectively), with overall numbers estimated at 5,000 – 8,000 in total. Adult NZ falcons measure between 40-50cm, with the males being smaller and lighter than the females (240-350g vs 410-720g). They are smaller than Australasian harrier hawks, which are abundant in NZ and can often be seen while driving in the countryside. As well as the falcon being much rarer, the main reason you’re less likely to see one is that unlike hawks which are often found eating roadkill, falcons only hunt live prey. They are incredible hunters, which can fly at up to 200 km/h and can catch prey larger than themselves. They mainly predate on other birds, but also on mammals, lizards and insects. Unlike most native NZ birds which are primarily found in native forests, NZ falcons have been found to also thrive in plantation pine forests.
