A male huia with its short beak and female with its long beak are depicted on a native New Zealand hinau tree. The beautiful tail feathers were prized by the Māori as a mark of status and later by the British as a fashionable hat accessory. Now extinct the huia were last seen in 1907 due to hunting, deforestation and the introduction of predators.
