'Lifes little treasures’ (wax-eye/touhou) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

Three young tauhou (waxeye or silvereye) bathe and play in a natural bird bath in the crevice of a tree, which was photographed in Hannah’s backyard. This artwork depicts the playfulness of youth and the bond of siblings. Tauhou means “stranger” in Māori, as these birds only arrived to NZ in the 1800’s; they are considered a native NZ bird however, as they were self-introduced (from Australia). They are now one of the most common birds in NZ, and are found in forests, suburban gardens, woodlands and orchards. Tauhou feed on a range of small insects, nectar and fruit. They can sometimes be either detrimental or beneficial to farmers, as they can damage crops by feeding on fruit such as apples and apricots, but conversely they also eat pests such as codling moth caterpillars and aphids too. This varied diet could attribute to their widespread success. They’re a small songbird at 12cm long, and weigh only slightly more than a NZ $2 coin! They can be found foraging in flocks, and often huddle fluffed up together in winter to stay warm. They are distinctive by their plumage which is mainly olive green and their bright white rings around their eyes.
