'Spring Visitor' (pīwakawaka/fantail) limited edition print

NZ$140.00

Fantails and kōwhai are one of New Zealand’s favourite birds and one of our favourite native trees. The fantail - also known as pīwakawaka - is the most common mainland native NZ bird. They can be found just about anywhere, from bush, to parks, urban locations, and gardens. They’re incredibly friendly birds, that often happily fly around within metres of people and are known for their loud ‘cheet cheet’ calls and impressive flight manoeuvres while catching insects. Hannah photographed this fantail in her backyard and combined it with a kōwhai photo she took at Tiritiri Matangi Island. Although the fantail doesn’t feed on the kōwhai tree (as its diet consists of mainly small invertebrates, rather than nectar or leaves), it’s a very important part of our ecosystem. It provides food for many of our native birds, such as kākā, tūī, kererū and korimako. It is also a very popular tree in many kiwi gardens, due to its beautiful golden yellow flowers which bloom in spring.

The artwork was drawn specifically to raise funds for the New Zealand Nature Fund, to support the Shore Plover Recovery Project. The original was auctioned on trademe and raised $2,710! Read the blog story here.
