'Kākāpō Kaitiakitanga' (Portrait orientation) limited edition print

from NZ$150.00

This portrait orientation print is a cropped version of a bigger landscape artwork. See the full landscape print here.

Kākāpō Kaitiakitanga celebrates one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary and endangered birds, and the people dedicated to its survival.

Once widespread throughout New Zealand, kākāpō numbers declined catastrophically, reaching just 51 birds (31 males, 20 females) in 1995. To prevent extinction, Ngāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation (DOC) established the Kākāpō Recovery Programme.

Kaitiakitanga is the te ao Māori principle of guardianship and care for the environment and its taonga (treasures). After decades of intensive conservation work, the 2026 population is at 325, with 90 chicks added in the latest breeding season.

Every kākāpō is named and individually monitored. This artwork features Kenneth, named after DOC Technical Advisor Daryl Eason’s father, as he hatched on his birthday in April 2019. The reference photograph was taken by DOC ranger Jake Osborne on Anchor Island (Pukenui) in January 2020, shortly after Kenneth’s release from a soft-release pen, following hand-rearing as a chick.

A labour of love for Hannah, the original 56 × 76 cm drawing took more than a year and just over 250 hours to complete. Every intricate feather and detail reflects her dedication to capturing Kenneth’s individuality and celebrating the remarkable conservation efforts giving this precious species hope for the future.

Limited edition fine art giclée print produced in New Zealand using the highest quality archival paper, inks and processes. Each print is hand signed and numbered by Hannah.
