Christchurch fundraiser exhibition for albatross research

September 1, 2026 Hannah Shand

There’s a very special group exhibition on at the moment at Christchurch's The Central Gallery.

Titled ‘Southward’, it’s special for a few reasons:

  1. The exhibition is raising funds for Dr. Kath Walker and Dr. Graeme Elliott’s Wandering Albatross Research Project.

  2. All of the exhibiting artists have journeyed with Heritage Expeditions to the Subantarctic Islands, and been inspired by their own adventure.

  3. It’s raising awareness of the many endangered birds which inhabit these incredibly remote and ecologically important islands.

My trip to the Subantarctic Islands in 2021 was one of the most incredible, memorable things I’ve ever done, and it deepened my appreciation and understanding of our seabirds.

I was very happy to donate an A2 Sailing Sooty print to be framed for this fundraiser exhibition. I’m also very happy to share that it’s been sold, with $437 being raised for the Wandering Albatross Research Project.

‘Southward’ features sculptures in bronze, glass and basalt, photographic images, etchings and etching plates, drawings in charcoal, conté and ink, and paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour. It’s brimming with beautiful depictions and stylised representations of harsh landscapes, dynamic seas, atmospheric weather, and resilient plant, bird, and wildlife.

The exhibition is on until 19th of September at The Central Gallery in Christchurch (including with sold artworks still on display).

Thanks to Aaron Russ from Heritage Expeditions for the artwork reference image, and thanks to Sarah Russ from Heritage Expeditions for organising the framing.
